TRP News TV Punjab Elections.Punjab Zila Parishad and Block Samiti Polls Heat Up as SAD Files Complaint Against AAP MLA’s Brother.
Chandigarh:
As Punjab prepares for the Zila Parishad and Block Samiti elections Live scheduled for 14 December, political tensions have intensified with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) lodging a formal complaint with the State Election Commission against the brother of AAP MLA Dimpy Dhillon. The development has added fresh controversy to an election widely viewed as a crucial political test ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly polls.
Punjab will go to the polls to elect representatives for 23 Zila Parishads and 123 Block Samitis, making these local body elections one of the largest democratic exercises in the state since the 2022 Assembly elections. While technically grassroots governance polls, political analysts describe them as a “semi-final” that will indicate the public mood before the next Assembly contest.
Complaint by Shiromani Akali Dal
According to SAD leaders, the party has approached the State Election Commission alleging violation of the model code of conduct by the brother of AAP legislator Dimpy Dhillon. The Akali Dal has claimed that the individual misused political influence during the election process, demanding strict action to ensure fair and transparent polls.
Senior SAD leaders stated that ruling party leaders and their relatives must not be allowed to influence voters or officials. “Local body elections must be conducted without fear or pressure. No one should be above the law,” a party spokesperson said, adding that the complaint was supported by evidence submitted to the Commission.
The Aam Aadmi Party, however, has dismissed the allegations as politically motivated, accusing the opposition of attempting to distract voters from development issues. AAP leaders said the party has full faith in the Election Commission and will cooperate with any inquiry.
High Political Stakes
The elections are significant for all major parties — AAP, Congress, Shiromani Akali Dal, and BJP — as they offer insight into voter sentiment at the village and block levels. For the ruling AAP government, these polls are being seen as a referendum on its governance, anti-corruption drive, and delivery of public services.
AAP leaders have been campaigning aggressively, highlighting initiatives in education, health, and electricity subsidies. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has repeatedly stressed that local bodies should be run by representatives who prioritize public welfare over political interests.
The Congress party, meanwhile, is aiming to regain its rural base, which has historically been its strength. Party leaders have focused on unemployment, inflation, and law-and-order concerns, claiming that people are disappointed with the current government.
The Shiromani Akali Dal is seeking to rebuild its influence in rural Punjab, particularly among farmers and Sikh voters. The party has raised issues related to agriculture, federal rights, and alleged misuse of power by the ruling party.
Administration on Alert
The Punjab State Election Commission has assured voters that strict security arrangements and monitoring mechanisms are in place. Officials have said that complaints from all parties will be examined impartially and that action will be taken wherever violations are found.
Polling will take place under tight supervision, with security forces deployed across sensitive areas to prevent violence or intimidation. The Commission has urged citizens to vote freely and report any irregularities.
Voters Watching Closely
For many voters, these elections are about local development — roads, sanitation, drinking water, and employment opportunities. However, the intense political campaigning has turned them into a broader contest of credibility among parties.
Political observers believe the results could significantly influence party strategies for 2027. A strong showing by AAP would consolidate its position, while gains by the opposition could signal shifting loyalties.
As Punjab heads into polling day, the complaint filed by SAD and the heated exchanges between parties underline just how politically charged these local body elections have become.
