Dhurandhar (2025): India–Pakistan Spy Thriller Blends Real Events, RAW Operations & Karachi’s Underworld – Indian intelligence film
Mumbai, December 2025:
Dhurandhar, subtitled “Stalwart,” has emerged as one of the most ambitious Hindi spy-action thrillers of recent years, bringing together real-world intelligence operations, geopolitical tensions, and a star-studded cast. Written, directed, and co-produced by Aditya Dhar, the film marks his return to large-scale espionage storytelling after the success of Uri. Produced under the banners of Jio Studios and B62 Studios, the film features Ranveer Singh, Akshaye Khanna, R. Madhavan, Arjun Rampal, Sanjay Dutt, Sara Arjun, and Rakesh Bedi, along with several supporting actors.
Released on 5 December 2025, Dhurandhar is the first chapter of a planned two-part series, with Dhurandhar Part 2 slated for release on 19 March 2026. The film runs for 214 minutes, making it one of the longest Indian films ever released, and spans multiple timelines, international locations, and layered political contexts.
Inspired by Real Operations and Turbulent History
The narrative draws significant inspiration from the real-life operational framework of India’s external intelligence agency, R&AW (Research and Analysis Wing). What makes the film unique is its deep dive into the interconnected world of intelligence agencies, local Pakistani gangs, and political pressure points. A central reference point is Operation Lyari, a major crackdown initiated by Pakistan against criminal syndicates in Karachi’s Lyari district—an area historically troubled by gang warfare, political patronage, and extremist penetration.
The film blends these real-world events with India’s own security crises, notably the IC-814 hijacking of 1999 and the 2001 Indian Parliament attack, creating a backdrop of heightened national security concerns. These incidents serve as narrative anchors to justify India’s urgency in adopting an aggressive counterterrorism strategy.
A Young Recruit, An Impossible Mission
At the core of Dhurandhar is Intelligence Bureau Chief Ajay Sanyal, played with quiet intensity by Akshaye Khanna. Disturbed by India’s growing vulnerabilities, Sanyal crafts a covert mission with a singular goal: penetrate and dismantle a terror network operating from Pakistan’s soil. However, the success of this high-risk assignment depends on an unconventional operative.
Enter a 20-year-old Punjabi boy, imprisoned for a violent revenge crime. Sanyal sees in him a rare combination of rage, resilience, and instinct that could be honed into a weapon. Against the advice of senior officials, Sanyal chooses to rehabilitate and train him, setting the stage for one of the film’s most compelling arcs—transforming an ordinary youth into a deep-cover asset capable of infiltrating Karachi’s most dangerous mafia circles.
Ranveer Singh plays this role with a raw, unpredictable energy, capturing the character’s evolution from prisoner to human weapon. His journey through the underbelly of Karachi, filled with betrayals, gang rivalries, and covert alliances, forms the emotional spine of the narrative.
The Price of Peace: Diplomacy Meets Dilemma
One of the film’s standout segments is the depiction of the tense negotiations during the IC-814 hijacking. The storyline shows the Indian government forced to release terrorists and pay a hefty ransom to protect innocent passengers. Minister of External Affairs Devarat Kapoor and Sanyal attempt to engage with terrorist Zahoor Mistry, highlighting the moral conflict that often accompanies geopolitical decision-making.
This inability to take offensive action becomes Sanyal’s turning point. The later Parliament attack in 2001 cements political approval for Operation Dhurandhar, setting the narrative into its explosive second half.
Setting Up for the Sequel
The film concludes with unresolved tensions and looming threats, clearly paving the way for the second instalment. With its blend of action, political drama, undercover operations, and real-world references, Dhurandhar positions itself as a large-scale espionage universe.
