Cold Wave Alert in Punjab: Temperatures Dip Below 0°C Across North India
A severe cold wave has tightened its grip across several northern states of India, including Punjab, Rajasthan, and Haryana, pushing temperatures to near-freezing and, in some places, below 0°C. The sudden intensification of cold conditions follows light rainfall in parts of the plains on Friday, which further lowered temperatures and increased chill levels.
Cold Wave Conditions Intensify After Light Rain
According to weather officials, light rain and increased moisture in the air have contributed to a sharp fall in both maximum and minimum temperatures across North India. As skies cleared after the rainfall, cold northerly winds set in, triggering classic cold wave conditions. Night temperatures in several districts have dipped close to freezing, while early mornings are witnessing dense fog, reducing visibility and disrupting daily life.
In Punjab, cities and rural belts alike are experiencing biting cold, with minimum temperatures hovering around 0°C in some pockets. Residents have reported frost-like conditions in open fields during early morning hours, raising concerns for winter crops such as wheat, mustard, and vegetables.
Punjab Weather: Cold Days and Chilly Nights
Punjab remains under a cold wave alert as icy winds continue to sweep across the region. Daytime temperatures are also struggling to rise, resulting in “cold day” conditions where the maximum temperature remains significantly below normal. Meteorological experts say that the combination of low sunshine, foggy mornings, and cold winds has intensified the chill factor.
Health experts are advising people, especially children and the elderly, to take precautions, as prolonged exposure to cold can lead to respiratory issues, hypothermia, and other cold-related ailments. Schools in some districts have adjusted timings, while people are avoiding early-morning travel due to fog and extreme cold.
Situation in Rajasthan and Haryana
Rajasthan, particularly its northern and western districts, is witnessing some of the harshest winter conditions of the season. Night temperatures in certain areas have dropped below 0°C, causing ground frost and affecting agricultural activities. Farmers are being advised to protect standing crops from frost damage by using light irrigation and other preventive measures.
In Haryana, cold wave conditions are equally severe. Dense fog during morning hours has affected road and rail traffic, with delays reported in several places. Low visibility has prompted authorities to urge commuters to exercise caution, especially on highways.
Weather Outlook for Other States
Other northern states, including Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, and parts of Madhya Pradesh, are also experiencing intense cold. Hilly regions are reporting sub-zero temperatures along with snowfall at higher altitudes, while plains are facing cold winds and fog.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that cold wave conditions are likely to persist for the next few days. However, a slight rise in daytime temperatures may be observed toward the end of the week as wind patterns gradually change.
Advisory and Precautions
Authorities have issued advisories urging people to stay indoors during peak cold hours, wear warm clothing, and ensure adequate heating arrangements where possible. Farmers have been advised to closely monitor crops and take protective steps against frost. Drivers are being warned about low visibility due to fog, especially during early morning and late-night hours.
As winter reaches its peak, residents across Punjab and neighboring states are bracing for a few more days of intense cold. Weather experts recommend staying updated with official forecasts and alerts, as conditions may change rapidly depending on wind direction and western disturbances.
